MMORPGs

Despite the time I've wasted... er...'invested' in playing Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games like RuneScape, I tend to play them in an anti-social manner, and often think to myself while playing that it would be worth paying more if I could have a 'world' to myself without all the annoying other players buzzing around.

Free-to-play MMORPGs:
  • RuneScape is the most popular free-to-play MMORPG. It is browser based using Java. I've been playing it for over six years without being tempted to pay to become a member. There is that much to do on the free world.
  • Stellar Dawn is the next MMORPG to be released from the makers of RuneScape. It has a sci-fi theme and will also be browser-based.
  • DC Universe Online was fun for about two weeks, but I was never able to wrap my head around any of the Research & Development machinery in my lair.
  • Elder Scrolls Online is the only MMORPG I've really been looking forward to over the last couple years (though I play it as if it were a RPG instead of an MMORPG). I'm playing it on my PS4 instead of on a PC.
  • Final Fantasy XIV is an MMORPG that I beta-tested many years ago. There were a lot of things I didn't like about it. Then in 2015 I saw a free 14-day trial, so I played it again. They got rid of most of the things I didn't like about it. I especially like that if you're anti-social you can play almost everything while ignoring the other players.
  • Game of War: Fire Age is a smartphone-based MMORPG that seems to be a cross between Age of Empire and the early Warcraft games.
  • Phantasy Star Online 2 is a hack and slash MMORPG for Windows, Playstation Vita, and smartphones.
  • Star Wars: The Old Republic is an MMORPG playable only in MS Windows.
  • Dungeons & Dragons Online is now free. Here are the wikipedia description page and the dedicated wiki site.
  • Gates of Andaron is a MMORPG which I believe has free play. The graphics look really good from what I've seen. Here is the dedicated wiki site.
  • Ether Saga Online is a free anime MMORPG. It looks pretty good, but I haven't started playing it quite yet.
  • Atlantica Online is a free 3D strategic turn-based MMORPG. The game is set in an alternate history Earth, with the game map consisting of large parts of the northern hemisphere. The setting is fantasy-themed with elements of steampunk. Here are the wikipedia description page and the dedicated wiki site.
  • AdventureQuest held my attention for about 20 minutes, but I kept playing for a couple weeks.
  • Pirates of the Caribbean Online is Disney's attempt to get in on the MMORPG genre with a Pirates of the Caribbean theme. Some friends and I tried playing but just got confused and gave up.
  • Guild Wars is an episodic series of multiplayer online role-playing games developed by ArenaNet and published by NCsoft.
  • Guild Wars 2 3D Fantasy.
  • A few of my friends have been playing Wizard 101 but I'm not sure if I'm ready to invest the time it would take to start playing it right now.
  • I played the zombie-themed Urban Dead for a month, but all my friends hated the lack of graphics and limited play per day.
  • Twelve Sky
  • Twelve Sky 2
  • Dogs of the Seas is a browser-based Pirate-themed Massive Multiplayer game (MMORPG).
  • ShadowTale is a free, browser-based MMORPG.
